Intern or Volunteer with IIE/West Coast
Komen Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness Internship

Overview:
The Global Partnerships team of the Institute of International Education West Coast Center is seeking an intern for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness (www.komen.org/global). The internship will provide excellent learning opportunities for anyone interested in international education, policy, program management and non-profit organizations. An internship experience with IIE will provide an intern with a unique "behind the scenes" look at the operations of an international organization. Past IIE interns have gone on to work for organizations involved in study abroad, English language training, international student programs and other areas.

Program:
The Komen Global Initiative works with partners in eight countries across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America to build local capacity in the fight against breast cancer. In partnership with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, IIE manages program activities around the following five components: Establishment of Country Teams, Development of Training Materials, Training for Key Stakeholders, Community Assessment Tool & Research, and Capacity Building, Mentoring and Professional Exchange.

Position:
The Intern will assist the Komen Global Initiative by working with staff members responsible for budgeting/finances, country supervision, program management, website design, promotional materials design, translation of program materials, event planning and public relations. The intern’s general administrative responsibilities will include preparing materials for conferences and site visits, editing participant profiles, maintaining the program’s contacts database, helping to monitor the program email accounts, and providing general assistance for projects as needed. The intern may have the opportunity to conduct research on the status of breast cancer internationally and may be asked to assist with translation if proficient in any of the program languages (Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian and Ukrainian).

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a student or recent graduate who possesses excellent administrative and writing skills and has an interest in a career in international education or development. Preference is given to individuals with study or living experience abroad and with demonstrated interest in international issues. The candidate should be organized, punctual, dependable, flexible, and very detail-oriented. Strong computer skills are required, and experience with desktop publishing and simple webpage maintenance are a plus. Computer and general training will be provided on an on-going basis as needed. Foreign language skills, specifically in Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian, or Ukrainian, are a plus.

• Volunteer Student Interns Receiving Credit – Undergraduate or graduate students may volunteer as interns as long as they are fulfilling an academic requirement or receive academic credit.
• Volunteer, Non-Student Interns – Non-students may also intern.

Time & Benefits:
Interns usually work between 15-35 hours a week in the IIE office, at agreed upon times. Although this is an unpaid internship, a small stipend may be available to cover the cost of local transportation.

Application instructions:
Please e-mail a resume and a brief statement of interest to Christina Stansell, Program Officer for the Komen Global Initiative, at globalkomen@iie.org. Your statement should include the following information: what dates you are available, how many hours per week you are available, and a brief summary of your interest and applicable qualifications for this position.
